Implementation: Modernization strategy, cloud-native applications, and a modernized data platformImplementation
N-iX started with an Enterprise Assessment and Product Discovery that covered the client's full application portfolio. The team defined a single architecture vision, a unified tech stack, integration standards, and a governance framework. It also set a decommissioning plan for each platform.
N-iX moved resources from several cloud providers onto a single AWS environment, following a migration strategy built from the assessment. In parallel, the team took over L2-L3 support for four business-critical platforms with about 200 back-end services and databases. They automated monitoring with Datadog and PagerDuty so the platforms stayed stable during the transition.
Cloud-native application modernization
N-iX rebuilt the core applications as microservices on Java, replacing monolithic architectures. React.js micro frontends consolidate several applications into one interface, and a shared component library keeps the user experience consistent.
The team modernized the applications in stages:
- Payroll and scheduling: an event-driven platform on AWS SQS replaced batch processing and integrated with the client's enterprise HR and payroll system. N-iX released it location by location over weekends, using SAFe to coordinate several teams. The MVP took five months.
- Driver operations: a React Native tablet application brought time tracking, digital inspections, and QR code vehicle assignment into one tool.
- Tracking for families and districts: a mobile app and a district dashboard share one codebase on Kafka (AWS MSK) and Aurora PostgreSQL. Database-level tenant isolation keeps each district's data separate.
Data platform modernization
N-iX built a three-layer data platform. An AWS data lake on S3 collects data from more than 15 enterprise systems, Snowflake serves as the central warehouse, and Power BI provides the analytics layer. The team created 10 production data models with dbt, starting with daily financial reporting.
N-iX also built a single-source-of-truth platform that works as middleware across eight enterprise systems. It matches and deduplicates records and publishes golden records for employees, vehicles, locations, and certifications. A custom vehicle telematics gateway normalizes GPS data from three providers.
